Psychotherapy: a psychological intervention designed to help people resolve emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal problems and improve the quality of their lives. Some are effective, but many haven"t been tested. Caucasians seek therapy more than racial/ ethnic minority groups. People from diverse backgrounds tend to benefit form therapy as well. Asian american and hispanic americans are less likely to seek services. Acknowledge difficulties encountered in adapting to dominant culture. Clients may prefer gender matched or ethnically matched therapists, but there"s no consistent evidence than this matters for treatment outcomes. Realize they may be contributing to problems. Experiencing some anxiety/ distress --> fuels motivation. Clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and social workers are the majority of the mental health profession. But people without advanced degrees also often offer psychological services.
