Birthplace of mohammed: founder of islam, 570 ad birth. Location of important shrine to many gods. 610 ad mohammed went into a cave in mecca: angel gabriel calls mohammed to be a prophet, told him to recite messages (revelations) from god. He goes back to mecca and teaches about his revelations. Shahadah: reciting the muslim profession of faith. Salat: ritualistic prayers 5 times every day. Zakat: giving alms (charity) to benefit the poor and the needy. Sawm: fasting during the month of ramadan. Ka"aba: square shrine building, black stone in a silver setting (exterior) Fell from heaven (probably a meteorite) to tell adam and eve where to build their altar. Represents a meeting place between heaven and earth. Originally polytheistic shrine: mohammed throws away the idols and rebuilt the ka"aba. Similar to jesus cleansed the ka"aba . Place for communal prayers: arabic masjid, place of prostration. Royal mosque where the caliph (ruler) would worship.
