The body"s negative reaction to a food protein. True food allergies happen each time the food is eaten. Seen more in kids w/ atopic disorders: Exposed to a particular protein and the body sees it as harmful. Eating food again triggers release of antibodies and histamine to expel the protein. Histamine affects respiratory system, gi, skin or cardio system. Symptoms depend on where the histamine is released. Not due to protein as food allergy. Protein rich gliadins trigger immune damage to small intestine. Diarrhea, bloat, wt loss, bone pain, anemia, chronic fatigue. Alterns the metabolic patterns that enhances host sensitivity. Lactose cant be metabolized into glucose and galactose as lactase is decreases w/ age. Can happen in result of viral infection, intestinal damage or antibiotic presence. Nausea, stomach pain, bloat, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, headache, irritability. Presence of the allergen must be declared in product. Highly refined oils from 1 of the 8 major food allergens.
