Post-wwii jewish analysts and others fled to america, where they established a branch of psychoanalysis called ego psychology: purpose of this is to bend oneself to fit the needs of normal life. Strong ego: the ability to bear a lot of trauma or experiences without it negatively degrading one"s psyche. No need for an analyst to be sympathetic/empathetic to a subject; an ability to receive information and understand without having to assimilate another"s experience and compare it to one"s own experience: ex. When we listen, and try to say back what was said, we often spit out an assimilated paraphrase.
