ANTHR-130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Powerage, Ethnography, Culture Shock
Document Summary
Class notes: anthropological theory today: postmodernism- very important because it rejects assumptions of modernism. So it is after and against/critique modernism (1920-1970) it was a period where as an anthropologist you can produce neutral/objective/unbiased account of a society: this assumption is critiqued by postmodernism: bias is unavoidable. Postmodernism say that this is wrong: reflexivity- reflecting critically about our own thinking. You interview people of different socioeconomic strata and ages (interviewing children reveals a lot): some people say that we are past this. Fieldwork- what truly distinguishes anthropology from other fields. Ethnography- collecting and analyzing information about culture: gathering evidence on the ground and it is the name of the final product (the written account of the practices of a society) Fieldwork- living and interacting with the people of group under study. An extended period of close involvement with the people in whose language or way of life an anthropologist is interested.
