Homo neanderthalensis: europe and w. asia (150-27 ka) Inflated cheeks, occipital bun, retromolar space, no chin, double arched brow ridges, wide and large nose, prognathism, robust. Modern humans meanwhile had no occipital bun, a chin, and limited development of browridges. Used mouth as a third hand (worn front teeth) Buried their dead but not clear if religious nature. Modern behavior: burials, personal ornamentation, care of elderly, and rock art. Neanderthals and modern humans co- inhabited in europe for 10 k years. Could have interchanged knowledge of tool usage. Interactions could be related to extinction of neanderthals. Hafted weapons and competent hunting (neanderthal behavior) Healthy adults are abundant in the animal remains. Homo heiderlgensis ( neanderthals + denisovans) and modern humans. Complex relationships between neanderthals, denisovans, and modern humans. Eastern asia and oceania have denisovan in ancestry. Small face: limited development of brow ridges, canine fossa. Limited development of occipital torus or bun.
