Consanguineal relations : genetically related ( sanguine = blood) Small kin group, which generally consists of parents and child (ren) Family of orientation the nuclear family in which one grows up (you, your parents, your siblings) Family of procreation : the nuclear family one establishes once grown up (you, your partner, your children) Nuclear families are common in two types of societies: Other societies are organized into descent groups, larger in groups who share a common ancestor. Descent groups retain a constant identity over time, even as membership changes. 2 types of descent groups: lineage : a descent group that can trace their common descent back to a shared ancestor. Clan : a descent group whose members claim a shared ancestor but direct genealogical links aren"t specified. The shared ancestor of a clan might be a non-human totem. Descent groups are usually unilineal : kinship is traced through either female relatives or male relatives.
