Geology and life are deeply connected over long time scales. Releases gasses trapped in earth"s interior: the original source of the earth"s atmosphere and oceans. Releases heat and creates chemical environments that may have helped originate life. The motion and recycling of rock between the surface and the interior. Shields and preserves atmosphere from the solar wind; Without it, the atmosphere would have been stripped (like on mars). Atoms in solids are locked in place, and hence preserve information about a time when they were first locked together. Igneous: molten rock that cools and solidifies. Metamorphic: structurally or chemically transformed by pressure or heat that were not enough to melt it. Sedimentary: made by gradual compression of sediments - sands, silts at bottom of seas or swamps. Rocks of any three types contain mixtures of different crystals, each representing a mineral: a crystal of a particular chemical composition.
