Document Summary

Mitosis was for growth and development and repair the sole and only function of meiosis is to make gametes. Need to make sex cells for sexual reproduction. It"s a contribution of genetic material from 2 different people coming together to create a child. Because it is genetic information from different people the children are going to be unique. Only have 1 complete sets of 23 chromosomes. Sperm cells with 23 chromosomes and an egg cell with 23 chromosomes will come together to create a zygote. Zygote has 46 chromosomes and it"s from zygote that all your cells are created. If egg cells and sperm cells had 46 chromosomes each, a child would be born with 96 chromosomes in all of their cells and that number would double per generation. A cell can be classified as haploid or diploid depending on the number of unique sets of chromosomes it has in its nucleus. Cells with two sets are called diploid.
