BIOSC-116 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Goose Bumps, Integumentary System, Blood Vessel
Document Summary
One of the seven characteristics of a living organism. The maintenance of ideal conditions within our bodies. Our internal body conditions (chemical composition, ph, temperature, etc) are very different from the environment that surrounds us. Always being monitored and adjusted to maintain our health. In a healthy person the internal environment is relatively stable, only small fluctuations occur, in contrast to the dramatic changes found in the external environment. Normal values are achieved by a collaboration of all your organ systems e. g. in order for our bodies to maintain a stable internal temperature several organ systems work together: Nervous system (hypothalamus is the temperature control center in the brain) Cardiovascular system (dilation or constriction of blood vessels) allow for evaporative heat loss. Muscular system (shivering when cold to create heat) All working together in order to achieve homeostasis of body temperature. Cells require oxygen, nutrients and minerals from the external environment.
