PSYCH-220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Anthony Greenwald, Implicit-Association Test, Procedural Knowledge
Document Summary
Relational selves: cannot generally explain it well to anyone else. Knowledge of this self takes form of procedural-knowledge. Consists of ways of doing things (or procedures) Special sort of knowledge you are not conscious of the knowledge itself and. Automatic, not very accessible to conscious awareness. Ex: ability to read, ride a bike, analyze set of data, ask someone on a date. Directs how we relate to the important people in our lives. Ex: visiting home with family after leaving, may fall back into old childhood. May be unpleasant experience, so you try to change it and oppose old patterns by relating to family as differently as possible (odd clothes, tattoos, piercings) routine. Although, patterns of relating to others are deeply ingrained and difficult to change. May still go to mum when feeling sick or sad. Self-relevant behavioural patterns that are not readily accessible to consciousness. Relational selves and implicit aspects of self-concept may work unconsciously.
