Much data available at bureau of justice statistics. California crime and corrections data are online. Prison and parole data available from california department of corrections and. Jail information available from bureau of state and community corrections (bscc) Arrest and crime data available from ca doj. Limited statewide probation or court data from doj and bscc. Relatively inexpensive method (already collected by agencies) Can combine with other data to estimate true rate of crime. Contain a large amount of data on large sample. Large amount of activity may not be reported. Victim surveys help get information on crimes not reported.
