PSYCH 14 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Binge Eating, Binge Eating Disorder, Bariatric Surgery
Document Summary
Short-term cbt is treatment of choice for bulimia. In the cbt (fairburn) the first stage is teaching the patient the physical consequences of binge eating and purging and the ineffectiveness of vomiting and laxative abuse for weight control. Patients scheduled to eat small, manageable amounts of food 5-6 times per day no more than 3 hour intervals between planned meals and snacks, which eliminates the alternating periods of overeating and dietary restriction. In later stages of treatment cbt focuses on alternating dysfunctional thoughts and attitudes about body shape, weight and eating. Coping strategies for resisting the impulse to binge and purge are also developed. Improvement in earlier sessions is the best indicator of who would recover by the end of the treatment. Short term treatments however may not provide a long lasting effect. Combining drugs with psychosocial treatments might boost overall outcome.
