Media researchers have focused most of their effort on two types of research: media effects research o. A theory is a set of principles or ideas that explains (and sometimes predicts) something o. If it holds validity, eventually you can predict the outcome of something. For example: boiling water- same result every time you conduct the experiment as to at what temperature water boils. Tries to understand, explain, and predict the effects of mass media on individuals and society o. Ex- research to uncover whether or not there is a connection between aggressive behavior and violence in the media-especially in children and teens. Conclusion- violent scenes on tv and movies do stimulate aggressive behavior in kids and teens-but not in all circumstances o. Ex- research to find whether or not people believe what they watch on tv- even if its not true.
