Miles davis established modal jazz with his release of kind of blue in 1959 to this day it is the best selling jazz record of all time. *the soloist is in charge of where, when, and how long they want to be in consonance or dissonance. *the soloist is in charge for the first time in jazz. Beginning as a bebopper, he played most notably with monk and miles david, the latter helping to launch coltrane as a star hard bop soloist. After recording kind of blue with miles, coltrane became the leader of modal. While experimenting with modal concepts from around the world, coltrane also connected his own spiritual awakening to this new style by composing modal music inspired by religious themes. Album recorded by coltrane"s quartet on december 9, 1964. Four part suite, broken up into tracks: acknowledgement (which contains the famous mantra that gave the suite its name), resolution, pursuance, and psalm.
