Document Summary

Polemarchus ( war lord ) = justice is doing good to friends and evil to enemies. De nition of justice is: to give back each what is owed doing good to friends, and harm to enemies . Socrates refutes by saying that a just man can never do evil. Problems with de nition: a) justice cannot be used to do harm b) justice requires knowledge to distinguish true/apparent friends and enemies, and discerning what is owed. Thrasymychus= justice is in the interest of the stronger. Says there are different kinds of justice, democracies, aristocracies, tyrannies- they bring laws to their citizens accordingly, and it is unjust to break these laws. Socrates refutes by saying: rulers are liable to error and often pass laws that are not in their best interest. Thrasymarchus states that injustice is more advantageous than justice because the unjust are always happier.
