Rain (ivens, 1929) compilation of shots from rainy city. Beautiful composition, repetition of visual motifs with music added later. Taking old/ found" footage and putting it together in a moving or shocking way. Example: andy warhol"s silent lms with no story, only action. Later lms had sound but no plot, just incident . Want the audience to undergo the experience of the lm- more feeling and less interpretation/ no story. Ex amulf rainer by peter kubelka, icker lm. Stems from abstract painting"s origins ( red square , white on white etc) Ernie gehr"s serene velocity , sharp intercutting of the same 2 shots/lenses. Michael snow"s wavelength (1967), slow zoom in with different lights/sounds. La region centrale , 360 degree angles, upside down shots. Cinema verite- andy warhol used in lms such as trash . Ex: nbc"s laugh in , comedy variety show meant for the family, often made fun of rock music, counterculture and hippies.
