The promise and peril of new medical technologies. Leads: wires that send impulses from the pulse generator to heart muscle. Goal of icd = prevent sudden death from heart failure. Must be adjusted for age and other possible diseases in population of interest. New medical technology greatly decreased the number of deaths by heart disease from 1990-predicted 2020. Spending on cancer treatment is overall less beneficial than spending on cardiac disease treatment. Use of technology is tested on multiple groups of patients/populations to test effectiveness. About 25% of people who received an icd did not meet the qualifications of absolutely needing on and would not benefit from having an icd. The type of hospital/doctor a patient sees greatly impacts the quality/type of treatment they receive. Rapid increase of icd procedures from 2002-2004. Procedures of icd implantation decreased post-heart attack/post-revascularization since 2004. Because people stopped being able to qualify for icd due to recent heart failure problems.
