Document Summary

Antibiotics & resistant bacterial infections in the 21st century. A treated and untreated cold lasts the same amount of time. Caused by a virus--you don"t need antibiotics. They help to select antibiotic resistant bacteria. Antibiotic: low molecular substance produced by microorganism that at a low concentration inhibits or kills other microorganism (bacteria) Antimicrobial: any substance of natural, semisynthetic or synthetic origin that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms but causes little or no damage to the host. All antibiotics are antimicrobials, but not all antimicrobials are antibiotics. Antibiotics come from soil from other microorganisms. Alexander fleming: since 1944, penicillin has saved ~80 million lives. Had it not been for penicillin, syphilis in europe in 1945 could have been the disaster of hiv/aids in africa. Antibiotic resistance: no action today, no cure tomorrow. Greatest challenge to 21st century human health. Without development of a new antibiotic, death rate caused by antibiotic resistance will rise to 10 million per year.
