Document Summary

Nbb370 lecture 2: wakefulness with associated with alpha and beta waves, even during sleep, the neurons are very active. Stage 4 sleep is the deepest sleep stage among the non-rem states. It lasts approximately 20 to 40 minutes and makes up about 10-15% of the overall sleep cycle. During this stage, about 80% of human growth hormone is released to grow and repair tissue. Stage 4 sleep is also defined as delta sleep or slow-wave sleep, where the amplitude of waves is very high and the frequency is low (1-4 hz). In order to wake someone up from stage 4 sleep, a more intense stimulus is needed than any other stage of non-rem sleep. Sleep problems associated with stage 4 and 3 are sleepwalking, sleep terrors, and sleep-related enuresis. Sleepwalking is the act or state of walking, eating, or performing other motor acts while asleep, of which one is unaware upon awakening. Sleep enuresis is more commonly known as bed-wetting.
