Document Summary
A professional is a person who engages in a pursuit requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation. Professionals posses a unique body of knowledge that is different from lay persons and other professions. They must acquire academic knowledge in a formal setting that could not be obtained in others ways such as on the job training. This knowledge must be validated in some way and be kept current by continuing education. Professionals work within a defined scope of practice. This scope is unique to the profession and others are not authorized to practice the profession. Part of a professional"s scope of practice is the right to establish a direct relationship with a client. Each profession is governed by a code of ethics which outlines the professional"s relationship with and obligation to peers and clients. Professionals choose to belong to an organization of their peers.
