Since the 1950s there has been a gradual transition from depending on physicians" clinical impressions alone to relying upon statistically valid findings from controlled studies. The popular media often misinterprets and misrepresents findings or sensationalizes minor scientific advances. Fraud also occurs due to pressure on scientists to produce results and publish journal articles. Health-related research includes basic science research,clinical research, epidemiology, and health services research. Basic science research explores the growth, development, structure, and function of the human body. Much of basic science research occurs at the cellular level and is conducted by professionals such as biochemists, physiologists, geneticists, and pharmacologists. Basic science research is the antecedent of advances in clinical medicine. Clinical research involves carefully controlled trials of diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, new drugs, or technological developments. These studies typically involve an experimental group that receives the new procedure, drug or test, and a control group that does not.
