Common effects on body systems: urinary system, reduced kidney function. Incontinence: uti, urinary retention, respiratory system, pneumonia, decreased respiratory effort, decreased oxygenation of blood, cardiovascular system, blood clots, reduced blood flow. Infections: skin breakdown and pressure ulcers, digestive system, decreased appetite and low fluid intake, constipation and/or bowel obstruction. Incontinence: electrolyte imbalances, nervous system, lack of simulation, feels of anxiety, feelings of isolation, confusion, depression, musculoskeletal system, brittle bones, contractures, muscle weakness and atrophy, footdrop. Prevention of pressure ulcers: etiology of pressure sores, pressure of bone against hand surfaces, pinching off of blood vessels. Prevention of skeletal problems: therapist encourage activities. Muscle atrophy: decrease in muscle due to disuse, the longer the atrophy exists the longer the recovery of the muscles take. Seen in patients who are immobile and on bedrest. Joints and contractures: contractures: tightness or restricted rom in a joint, hip, knee, ankle.
