Document Summary

Economic policy responses to the rise of the precariat. Background: we are experiencing today the rise of a new social class, the precariat. The precariat is the new working class that is emerging in place of the old working class. Much of this is gone as a result of globalization. Millions of manufacturing jobs have been lost and the ones that remain offer less security and less pay. As a result of globalization, a new working class is emerging: the precariat. This new working class may work in manufacturing. It is heavily concentrated in service industries and is also a part of the emerging gig economy associated with firms like uber or task rabbit. The new working class has, on the whole, jobs that are less secure and more temporary. These new conditions correspond to the more rapid processes of capitalist restructuring. Firms are constantly changing themselves in order to become more profitable.
