PCB 4233C Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Viral Load, Subtypes Of Hiv, Sarcoma
Document Summary
Applies to infections by both hiv-1 and hiv-2. Incorporates the previous 1993 reporting criteria for hiv infection and aids into a single case definition. The presence of hiv is identified by a t-lymphocyte count or determing the viral load. Acute primary hiv infection: symptoms, fatigue, mild fever, sore muscles, occasional diarrhea, swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) Durnig this stage of hiv infection, a test for hiv antibodies will normally give positive result: viral load test will also be positive, t-lymphocyte do not drop to a level that compromises body defense. A person during this stage is considered to be suffering from hiv infection. At this point, it is conceivable that the body could successfully clear hiv from its tissues and restore itself to a normal state of health. Infants have tested positive initially, then showed up free of infection weeks or months later. Possible that a person may not progress beyond hiv infection for a decade or more.
