Document Summary

A permanent method of storing memories, with an unlimited capacity. An internal or external stimulus that activates information stored in long-term memory. Encoded at the same time as the new memory. Physical surroundings become encoded as retrieval cues. Memories are enhanced when retrieval conditions match those present during encoding. Physiological/psychological state is used as a retrieval cue. Our ability to retrieve information is greater when our internal state at the time of retrieval matches our original state during learning. When information retained in memory comes out of storage. Serial position effect: tendency to recall items at beginning and end of lists, primacy effect, better recall for items at beginning of list, recency effect, better recall for items at end of list. Recall: memory task to retrieve previously learned information. Information present at time of learning tends to be effective as retrieval cue. Context-dependent memory: remembering better when attempting to recall information in same context in which it was learned.
