Duverger"s law: duverger"s law has two mechanical efects, elite strategy, voter strategy, incenivizes paries to appeal to a broad base of support. Paries tend to be heterogeneous coaliions: two party system discourages the entrance or support of third party candidates/ extremists. Second ballot elecions or runof elecions: ensures that the winning candidate gets an absolute majority of the votes. Voters incenivized to vote sincerely in the irst round. Voters select most preferred opion of those available in second round. Allows small paries or extremist to enter into the irst round. Will pick the condorcet winner if she makes it to the second round. But the irst round may eliminate more than 50% of populaions irst preferences. Meaning it is possible that the condorcet winner is eliminated in the irst round.
