PSY-2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Psych, Emotional Reasoning, Deep Learning
Document Summary
Na ve realism- the belief that we see the world precisely as it is (also known as common sense realism) Perception isn"t always reality because our bodies are designed in a way that we have instincts and make assumptions. Psychology gains and analyzes information using the scientific method. Perceptions are based on our own needs, connotations, personality, previously formed cognitive patterns, nervous system/ biology. Heuristics- general rule that is usually/typically correct (mental shortcut), only consider options that are most likely to produce a solution while we ignore other options which saves time and mental effort but can sometimes lead to wrong decisions. Ex: kim enjoys classical music, horseback riding, tennis, and polo shirts. Representativeness heuristic- judging the probability of an event on how prevalent that event has been in past experience like stereotyping because it"s in our nature to do so.
