COMM 1010 Lecture 4: Ideology, Hegemony, and Critical Cultural Studies
Document Summary
Most important conceptual category in cultural studies. Often treated as synonymous with culture" (especially popular culture") Ideology is usually broader and wider-reaching than culture". Can refer to systematic body of ideas articulated by a particular group of people. Ideology suggests a certain masking, distortion, or concealment. Here, it is used to indicate how some texts and practices present distorted images of reality (false consciousness) In this understanding, the powerful use it to take advantages of the powerless. Ideology conceals the reality of subordination from those who are powerless. As a result, the subordinate classes do not see themselves as oppressed or exploited. Useful conceptual framework to talk about various systems of oppression. Patriarchy, racism, heteronormativity, classism, colonialism, imperialism, etc. Called for revolution of proletariat (working class) Aim to lead to socialism and subsequently communism (utopian state where workers rule and there"s no private ownership) Coincided with 1848 people"s revolutions around europe and parts of south america.
