*based on the reading from g. william skinner* Gazetteers: a compilation of information on areas; summaries of raw data for particular parts of china. People"s communes: 25000 of these group the chinese rural population by 1959. The people"s communes, by 1960, are broken up to around 75000. Skinner claims that there had to be 75000+ standard marketing systems. Skinner argues that at the top, china is divided by macroregions (areas where it is relatively difficult to move from one area to the other). To understand china, we need to not look at china as a whole, but look at it in the context of its macroregions. These macroregions often do not conform to the provincial boundaries. They each have their own rhythms; they are not in sync with one another. One part of china may thrive while another is declining.
