PHIL 3000 Lecture 4: PRP 4
Document Summary
The common aspect that causes humans to gravitate towards dog fighting and opera is the pleasure that they experience from both. Pleasure is exploited by systematic organizations who put prices on it without considering the type of pleasure associated with the experiences. Opera is a form of higher pleasure which does not violate individual rights while dogfighting is one that does. As mills" argues, those who have experienced both have the capacity to distinguish between which is higher or lower and often gravitate towards is the higher pleasure. Mills" states that one should choose qualitative higher pleasures over quantitative pleasure while considering the sacred individual rights. There may be instances where the pleasure is higher amongst a greater number of people; however, the activity that is the source of that pleasure may fail to respect the individual rights of others. In the case of dogfighting we must consider the rights of the dogs.
