Document Summary

Women avoid referring to sexual acts as sexual violence because they do not want to be labeled as lesbians, an idea argued to be anti-male and having sexual interests outside of heterosexuality. The use of gender-neutral terms helps avoid the idea that sexual activities and eroticism are violent to women in certain situations. By placing sexual violations under generic genderless violence, women might also be protecting themselves from reliving the trauma of the experienced abuse. General, genderless violence is easy to accept where as sexual trauma can be extremely destructive to a person. Furthermore, women are often forced to follow the patriarchy in order to maintain the legitimacy of their views and reform the system. Throughout this entire process, women appear to lose their self-respect and become victims of male control. When men sexually harass women, it demonstrates their male control over sexual access to women showcasing that in such situations men want to dominate over the female.
