Document Summary

Lecture #4: structure & development of the nervous system. Structure / connections visible to the naked eye. Example methods: cell staining and tract tracing. Receives sensory information from the sensory organs. Synapse (connect) with nerves in the spinal cord. Send information to / from muscles and sensory receptors. Afferent axons: bring somatosensory information to the cns via dorsal root ganglia. Efferent axons: bring muscle and gland control information from the cns to the muscle via ventral root. Excited increases blood flow to skeletal muscles; raises blood sugar; causes goose bumps, etc. Closely attached to brain and spinal cord. Between arachnoid membrane & pia mater: subarachnoid space. Filled with cerebrospinal fluid (csf) - provides all the nutrients ; removes waste. 3 & 4 connected via cerebral aqueduct. Csf resembles blood plasma - but there"s no blood because of the blood-brain barrier (selectively permeable) Varies throughout neocortex in a regular way. White matter = axons, myelin, and glia cells.
