Document Summary

Describe current theories about processes responsible for the movement of materials through plants in xylem and phloem tissue. Xylem: transport of water is passive and depends on transpiration and the physical properties of water. Chemical substances that are needed for photosynthesis are carried by xylem tissue from the roots up to the leaves where they will used for the manufacturer of food (photosynthesis). Phloem: phloem vessels are involved in the transportation of organic nutrient products (particularly amino acids, sugars and plant hormones) to all parts of the plants. Movement occurs in two directions, up towards the flower and down to the roots. Xylem: the transpiration stream theory (cohesion-adhesion-tension theory) Transpiration evaporation of water from leaf cells through stomata. Cohesion water molecules tend to bind together, forming a continuous column. Adhesion water molecules stick to the sides of the xylem tubes. Source sugars and other mineral nutrients are loaded" into the phloem sieve.
