Document Summary

In constructing the labour supply curve we hold constant all other variables that would affect the willingness of workers to supply labour, except the wage. If any of these other variables change, the supply curve will shift. The three most important variables that cause the labour supply curve to shift are: Increases in population: as the population increases due to natural increase and immigration, the labour supply curve will shift to the right. Changing demographics: demographics refers to the composition of the population. The more people who are between the ages of 16- 65 and are able and willing to work, the greater the quantity of labour supplied. Another major point is the changing role of women. The increase in the labour force participation of women has significantly increased the supply of labour in australia. Changing alternatives: the labour supply in any particular labour market depends, in part, on the opportunities available in other labour markets.
