Early psychological experiences affect the development of the nervous system and can determine vulnerability to psychological disorders. Plasticity of the cns helps us to adapt more readily to our environment. The most recent research evidence suggests that there is an interaction between the brain (structure, function, neurotransmitters) and psychosocial factors (socialization, rearing, life events). The brain affects our psychosocial factors and our psychosocial factors affect our brain. Bother genetics and life events play a part in the development of brain structure and function. These, in turn, can affect vulnerability to psychopathology. Based on research, and consideration of the nature and cause of psychological disorders, we must examine both biological and psychological factors when studying psychopathology. Conditioning and cognitive processes: respondent (classical conditioning) and operant learning, environmental relationships. Cognitive science is concerned with how we acquire and process information and how we store and retrieve it.
