ANTH 316 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Net Reproduction Rate, Respiratory Alkalosis, Infant Mortality
Document Summary
At high altitudes also slower growth and maturation both for natives and non-natives if not young enough, due to the cold and hypoxia. See a descreased net reproductive rate in immigrants due to fetal wastage and infant mortality. Respiratory alkalosis may result in nausea and vomiting. Symptoms of acclimatization, lasts a couple of days. Lowered air pressure slows diffusion across membranes and cells become waterlogged, further reducing diffusion/transport. Can happen to natives after trip to lowlands. Cerebral edema happens at greater than 12,000m. Severe headache, poor judgement, hallucinations, clumsiness, coma, death. Failure to develop to altitude or lose tolerance. Have to be bled every 2-3 weeks or descend. Due to increased blood viscosity and uneven blood flow through the lungs. Higher risk of miscarriage and lower birth weight. High altitude populations: physical and cultural adaptations. Andes and himalayas: more efficient glucose metabolism for brain use. Normal birth weight babies- better transport oxygen to the fetus.
