Document Summary

Scene/set design is the rst element of a production we see: we generate our rst impressions off of what we rst see onstage. Setting tone and style: tone = the mood. Can be achieved with color and lighting, as well as shapes and line: style. Ex. minimalism (quite bare), expressionistic (doesn"t exist in real life), realistic (life-like), constructivist (machines), etc: things can have very different tones but similar styles. Locale and period: set designers are also needed to help establish when and where the play is taking place, costume designer plays a bigger role in setting the time period. Ex. castles can exist in the modern day too. clothing style sets the past and the present apart. Central image or metaphor: sometimes set designer will use a central image or metaphor to symbolically represent a theme or idea of the play. Practical design problem solving: set design needs to be functional.
