Langston hughes and other major figures in the harlem renaissance begin pushing for more open discussions about black culture prior to slavery. At the time many artists and musicians in harlem believed that the way to elevate black culture is to perform and create european art in an indistinguishable fashion from european art and song. Hughes would argues that in doing so, african-americans are implicitly acknowledging that white culture is superior to black culture, and pushes for an embrace of. Duke ellington grows up in an atmosphere where african history was studied, and his piece, sepia. Sepia refers to a color of brown, and panorama means a number of shades at the time, different shades of tan were treated very differently, and there was a large disconnect between african-americans of different skin tones.
