The first iteration of jazz that is considered a modernist art-form: also the type of jazz most associate with the term jazz . Bebop was a wildly exciting music that challenged many aspects of jazz as well as the technical capabilities of instrumentalists. Required a high level of technical skill instrumentalists could not just begin playing bebop. Shaw nuff dizzy gillespie and his all-star quintet (featuring charlie parker on saxophone) The melodies are quirky and technically demanding. The solos consist of a flurry of rapid notes. In comparison to earlier styles of jazz the solos have a greater detachment from the actual melody of the tune. Characterized by a driving pulse instead of a swinging rhythm: songs have a 4-beat push like in kansas. Not for dancing, composed for listening: music for people in the sitting section of the savoy ballroom. Younger musicians in swing music: side-men, people who wouldn"t get a solo for swing bands would gather at night.
