National security: cold war military security, post cold war. Social and political issues: securitization the act of co-opting security as rational for action in traditionally non security arenas. 14,000 wars recorded in history: war=1,000 death/year, conflict=25-100 deaths/year. History of warfare lines vs. columns: evolution of the offense and the defense, nature of war remains the same, its character changes due to technology and innovation, revolutions in military affairs (rmas) Hegemonic war: waged for control of the whole system, wwii was last one. A concept in which the industrial might of a country is brought to bear last total war was wwii. Limited war: war with limited goals, war that will stop as soon as the goals are reached, a just war, lawful war, last limited war was desert storm. Civil war: parties within the political boundaries of the nation fighting each other.
