Hirst: everyone is going to die we might as well accept this. The shark: the shark represents the physical embodiment of the impossibility of death. The shark represents terror and power and maybe death itself. The bene ts of using a real shark is that it was once alive and breathing and swimming. it also has the history of a shark. It has characteristics apart of it, like living and dying. He"s arrogant and inappropriate and that one girl in the class hates him for it and also respects him for it. But people dont want to talk about death. He grabs us and shocks us and then forces us to confront what art is and the subject matter he"s presenting. People are upset at him because animals are being exploited for aesethtic purposes and that he is putting things into the art world that they feel like dont belong there.
