AVT 307 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Pleasure
Document Summary
How do we know we"ve come across beauty. It"s emotional and extremes of stimulation and relaxation. My mind is hyper alert but my body is at ease. We feel our wholeness in front of beauty. Beauty teaches that the brain is a physical organ and we can feel thought. If you aren"t feeling this way you aren"t actually feeling beauty. If you aren"t having that feeling it"s just pretty. You don"t have think about pretty, it"s just relaxing not exciting. Sometimes the object of beauty is bizarre with an aspect that would be considered ugly. Such experiences are insights into new aesthetic experiences. We put up a little resistance to it. There has to be something more than sheer sensory pleasure. Something stops us and makes us feel and think. The merely attractive are not beauty because they lack the element of awe that announces it. Beauty has to be something that someone has discovered.
