Biology has to encompass all physics and chemistry into living organisms. Cells make up are living organisms; many are just one cell :) All living things pass on their material to the next generation through nucleic acid; gene - *go to essential concepts at the end of every chapter* Unity and diversity of cells: cells vary enormously in appearance and function. All living things are infinitely varied when viewed from the outside, they are fundamentally similar inside. Flow of information is called central dogma . Viruses are living organisms- in their own weird way. All present day cells have apparently evolved from the same ancestral cells. Genes: provide the instructions for cells form, function and complex behavior. The invention of the light microscope (1700) led to the discovery of cells. Anton van leeuwenhook- develops first real microscope. Robert hook- examined corked and coined the term cells .
