Spanish in america: columbus brought east and west worlds together. Voyaged meant spain had a whole new world to claim. 4 separate voyages to america thinking it was asia, but eventually realized he was not in. Asia but was in europe but kept looking for a quick way to asia. Obsessed with finding the northwest passage but were blocked by the arctic ice. Idea that earth war round was not discovered by columbus, but by egyptian-greek named ptolemy. Problems because he thought the world was smaller than it is. Didn"t reckon on two continents being in the way: for one to get richer, one has to get poorer. Europeans want to get rich but were under a new economic system. Explains how and why they exploited asia, america, and africa. Not capitalism (aka they don"t believe you could create wealth and believe there is a set amount of money measured in gold)
