A basic assumption: we like those who reward us. Because they provide direct rewards, treating us well. Because they provide indirect rewards, being present when positive events occur proximity: liking those near us. We tend to like those who live and work near us. Small distances have a larger influence on our relationships than most people realize. Mere exposure, or repeated contact, with someone usually increases our liking for him/her. Convenience: proximity is rewarding and distance is costly. Partners who are close at hand are usually able to provide us more benefits, at lesser expense, than distant partners can. Proximity and the familiarity that results can cause complications and make things worse. People who have met online come face-to-face for the first time. Partners in a long-distance relationship are reunited after some time apart physical attractiveness: liking those who are lovely. Our bias for beauty: what is beautiful is good.
