W/reference to the 13th amendment which bans slavery w/one exception: conviction. Argument: our criminal justice system grew out of slavery. Statistics: u/s is home to 5% of world"s pop. But 25% of the world"s prisoners (1/4 human beings) 13th: makes it unconstitutional for someone to be held a slave; grants freedom to all americans; exceptions: criminals. Loophole: there to be used as a tool for whatever purpose one wants to use it. After civil war: african americans were arrested in mass; arrested for extremely minor crimes (loitering,etc. ) The birth of a nation: confirmed the story that many whites wanted to tell of the civil war"s aftermath. Overlook: accurate prediction on the way race would play in the u. s. Klan never had the ritual of burning the cross; life-imitating art. Lynching of aa"s under the idea that they have done something criminal. Permanent 2nd class status civil rights activist: wanted more than civil rights more human rights.
