Collection of devices connected in order to communicate and share resources. Connects relatively small numbers of machines in close geographical areas. Ring topography: connects nodes in close loop on which messages travel in one direction. Star topography: centers around one node to which all others are connected and through all messages are sent. Bus topography: nodes connected to a single communication line that carries messages in both directions, wide-area network (wan) Connects lans over a large geographical distance: metropolitan-area network (man) Infrastructures that have been developed in/around large cities: gateway: handles all communication between the lan and other networks.
