Small program that knows the way a device expects to receive/deliver the information. Memory management: operating systems must employ techniques to: Track where/how a program resides in memory. Convert logical addresses into actual addresses: logical address. Reference to a stored value relative to the program making the reference: physical address. Single contiguous memory management: 2 programs in memory: Application system: logical address is an integer value relative to the starting point of the program, physical address is a logical address added to the starting location of the program in main memory. Partition memory management: single contiguous memory management. Operating system + 1 program in memory at one time: partition memory management. Operating system + any number of programs in memory at one time: fixed partitions.
