It is not always considered a moral method of behavior modi cation by the general public, so many other methods (differential reinforcement, antecedent manipulations, extinction) are normally considered before punishment is. Negative punishment methods will be attempted before the consideration of positive punishment methods. There are two major types of negative punishment procedures. Time-outs are periods when a person exhibiting a problem behavior loses access to a reinforcer in their immediate environment. It is short for time-out from positive reinforcement . The person being put in time-out cannot be disruptive or distracting to others still in the vicinity of the person exclusionary time out: when a person is removed from the vicinity of the reinforcer, such as into another room. Since a person is losing access to a reinforcer by exhibiting a problem behavior, they must be able to gain a reinforcer through some sort of differential reinforcement regimen as well.
